Australian DerbyFor three-year-old horses in this part of the world, the Australian Derby is the race to win. Run over 2,400m, under set-weights at Randwick Racecourse during Sydney’s Autumn Carnival, the $2 million purse attracts the best around (Phar Lap, Tulloch and Kingston Town are all past winners). Naturally, this provides some spectacular racing but, the horses being young and often untested at a true staying distance, even better Australian Derby betting. For this reason, roughies aren’t worth writing off and Australian Derby odds favour the bold, not necessarily the beautiful.
When weighing up Australian Derby 2015 form, good lead-up races are the Randwick and Rosehill Guineas, and the Tulloch Stakes. All of these races have distance about them, and as they’re held in Sydney, it helps the horses acclimatise to the Sydney weather (and for the non-Queenslanders or New South Welsh, the clockwise track and body-conscious locals). It’s also worth noting that even though Randwick is, the Australian Derby is not for the young ladies – only nine fillies have won the race in almost 150 years, with the last (Shamrocker, 2011) the only filly in the event.
