Lang Ling and his Inner Mongolia Rider Horse group made an impact last season through Mongolian Khan. In an exclusive interview in the next issue, Lang reveals his exciting plans in New Zealand and China.
Exciting times ahead with mongolian khan. The excitement continues for Mr Lang Ling and his Inner Mongolia Rider Horse group with their star of the show, Mongolian Khan. Lang has arrived in New Zealand to attend the Thursday night’s NZ Thoroughbred Racing Awards dinner in Hamilton and wasted no time getting down to the Cambridge stables of Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman to inspect Mongolian Khan. There was a glint in his eyes as he caught up with his favourite horse and not only relive some of the excitement he provided last season but also what lies ahead. Though looking a bit wooly with his winter coat, Mongolian Khan impressed Lang as he cast his eyes over the top-class stayer with the head of the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse noting he had grown a shade since his three-year-old campaign. Mongolian Khan was bought as a Derby prospect and he lived up to that lofty expectation twice, winning the New Zealand Derby and the Australian Derby. That feat, which hadn’t been achieved since Bonecrusher completed the Derby double 29 years earlier, has installed Mongolian Khan as a standout to win the Champion Three-Year-Old Award and also hot favourite for the Horse Of The Year. He is also a strong contender for Stayer Of The Year and through his deeds the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse group is a leading contender for the Owner Of The Year award. Lang is looking forward to the awards function and has his sights set even further ahead to a campaign aimed at the Melbourne Cup. Mongolian Khan continued his build-up for a return to racing when working over 1200 metres with his stablemate, Wellington Cup winner Maygrove, at Cambridge this morning and he pleased rider, Opie Bosson. “He worked nicely and was really relaxed,” said Bosson. “He feels great.” Lang wasn’t on hand for the gallop but was pleased to hear Bosson’s report and also listen to the comments of Baker, who admits he couldn’t be happier with Mongolian Khan. “He’s done well since his trial at Ruakaka and I was thinking of trialling him again at Taupo next week, but I’m not sure,” said Baker. “I’ll see how he does in the next few days. I don’t want to have him too ready too soon. He’s got a big campaign ahead of him. It might be better to trial him when we get to Melbourne.” Mongolian Khan’s workmate, Maygrove, will head to Taupo to trial, as will Turn Me Loose and Dal Cielo, a couple of the stable’s other Group One winners. The trio will join Mongolian Khan in Melbourne along with the stable’s Victoria Derby prospect Zacada, who was also ridden in work this morning by Bosson. “He galloped up well but he’s still got a lot to learn,” said Bosson of Zacada. “I also galloped Turn Me Loose and he’s flying.”
