Half Halts What is the purpose of the half halt? It improves the frame and rhythm of the horse when in motion. Or it gets these back again when they have been lost! The half halt is also used to make the transition from a higher to a lower gait, or from a lower to a higher gait. Here specifically the half halt engages the hindquarters of the horse. It is used before riding a volte, before riding through a corner, etc. It is used to prepare for every exercise. It means that the horse should pay attention; something new is coming!
To give the half halt, the rider uses a holding rein aid and simultaneously drives with the leg, almost immediately softening the rein (without losing the connection). The rider should use his driving aids when the leg of the horse to which the half halt was directed is leaving the ground. The rein and the leg aids are given on the same side of the horse, most often on the outside. The holding on the reins must not be so strong of held so long, however, that the horse stops. When the horse responds to the aids, giving to the hand and engaging from the leg, the rider has asked the horse to “prepare,” and the horse has responded that “he is ready!” The rider must respond with giving, forward hands that allow the horse to carry himself in his restored balance. |
