Dear All,
I realise I have been very remiss in keeping up with my newsletters, mainly because I have my hands full keeping up with my website, blog, and also my new facebook page for which there is a link below. Always refer to the links below if you wish to keep pace with my wanderings. My facebook page is likely to be the most up-to-date so please like and share if you are on facebook.
Those of you who have already been following any of the latter will know that I am now tackling North America, starting on May 1st 2014 from the easternmost tip of Newfoundland at Cape Spear. After the usual trials and tribulations including a fall from a bolting horse which necessitated several days' rest, I reached the bridge over the St Lawrence river at Trois Rivieres in Quebec province with my Newfoundland pony part-bred mare Lady. I followed the Trans Canada Trail where possible, and the attached photo shows Lady and me kitted out for local conditions (cold, rain, insects and stony ground) on the Newfoundland T'Railway which forms part of the TCT. Although I bought an old estate car to store and transport excess baggage to my final destination, during this time I travelled without back-up, sometimes with a second horse to alternate as a riding/packhorse with Lady. The second photo shows one of my campsites in the New Brunswick woods - there are bears and cougars out there, but happily I did not meet them, though I did see moose, caribou, deer and porcupine. The intention was to camp most of the way, but Canadian hospitality dictated that in fact my tent was rarely pitched!
On April 9th I fly back to Canada to continue the ride for another three months. Lady has been wintering at a stables near Ottawa, and after a re-start from Trois Rivieres I intend to ride back to Ottawa and then follow the TCT again where possible southwards through Ontario to cross into the USA at Detroit. I am currently looking out for a second horse to join the team.
Hwyl
