Trainer Todd Pletcher hit an earnings milestone Saturday, becoming the first thoroughbred conditioner to top $300 million.
The New York-based trainer reached the mark thanks to Azar's runner-up effort in Belmont Park's Grade II Pilgrim Stakes for 2-year-olds.
Pletcher, 48, won his first and only Kentucky Derby in 2010 with Super Saver. His Rags to Riches also took the 2007 Belmont Stakes before Palace Malice won the race in 2013.
The D. Wayne Lukas protegee is on pace as well to pass his mentor for the record number of Derby starters. Pletcher, an Eclipse Award winner as top trainer in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007, saddled Materiality and Carpe Diem in this year's race.
Pletcher passed Lukas for No. 1the all-time earnings list in May of 2014. His horses have generated more than $17,000 per start.
"I think [setting the record is] a product of inflation, to be honest, and I don't think anybody is going to match Wayne's accomplishments in this business," Pletcher said last year. "That said, it's still a satisfying milestone for the team and a record to be proud of."
