Australia is interested in hosting the World Equestrian Games in 2022.

Equestrian Australia confirmed it had submitted a non-binding Expression of Interest in relation to the Games to the world governing body, the FEI.

By submitting its formal interest, Equestrian Australia will be provided with the official FEI bid documentation, which will enable it to further explore the feasibility of bidding for the Games.

Adelaide and South East Queensland are being considered as possible host locations.

The Australian body said its expression of interest carried no obligation for the country to proceed with a formal bid.

Further analysis and deliberations were required before any decision was made, it said.

The FEI opened the bidding process on March 31 this year, with expressions of interest required to be lodged by May 15. Interested nations must submit bid applications and the answers to a questionnaire in August.

he official candidate phase begins in December, launching a process that will end in November next year, when the successful host will be announced at the FEI General Assembly in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The Games, which take place every four years in the middle of the summer Olympic cycle, feature all of the FEI disciplines – Jumping, Dressage and Para-Equestrian Dressage, Eventing, Driving, Endurance, Vaulting and Reining.

The FEI has yet to name countries that have expressed an interest in the 2022 event.

The 2018 Games will be held in Bromont, Canada, in 2018. It suffered a series of high-profile resignations late in April amid funding and backing concerns. The resignations included the chief executive and the chairman of the Canada-based board organising the Games.
