Last year the Royal Salute Polo Gold Cup was a huge success, an audience of over 8000 witnessed the return of high quality international standard polo to <country-region wst="on"><place wst="on">China</place></country-region>. This year an audience in excess of 12,000 are expected to participate in the lifestyle of the King, with the acclaimed “King of Sports and sport of the Kings” and the associated hospitality and entertainment provided by leading luxury brands such as Cartier, Maserati, Zegna and the title holder Royal Salute premium scotch whisky. This year’s tournament is hosted by CCTV- Sport Channel 5 as well as by the local authorities and is supported by the China National Horse Industry. It will also bear witness to the development of the sport of kings in China, with a number of important ‘firsts’: the first Chinese team-owners; Brian Xu, CEO of Shanghai Marco Stationary Company Limited
and co-owner of Nobelesse has entered the team ‘Nobelesse’ in which he is also playing having developed his skills significantly since being one of the new player-ambassador in 2007; Dr Yan Bin owner of the Red Bull franchise also enters a team but will command from the side-lines not from the field of battle, his “Reignwood” team represents the Reignwood Polo Club the first international standard polo club being built in the Beijing area.
Two other notable ‘firsts’ are the entry into the tournament of the team ‘Royal Brunei’ which includes polo playing members of the Brunei Royal Household, and as such demonstrates that polo as the ‘the sport of kings’ and, lastly the participation of Liu Shi Lai in the main ‘A’ Division of the tournament; Shi Lai is the first locally based Chinese national to achieve the skill level required to play in this grade & speed of tournament.
Saturday 25th October 2008 is a key date, as it is the first time that Cartier has hosted in China one of the now globally famous ‘Cartier International’ polo events. Cartier has been creating and building the best one-day social events globally for more than 24 years; attended by royalty and celebrities and boasting crowds of over 23,000 per day.
In all there are 14 teams that compete in the 2008 tournament, which runs over 10 days; the players coming from 13 different countries and territories. We are honored that leaders of industry and commerce from around the world have entered strongly competitive teams and some of the worlds leading luxury brands are in here in support, adding to the elegance, glamour and excitement of the occasion.
