Hong Kong Equestrian Federation 香港馬術總會 AGM - Candidates' CV Mr. Kevin Kruger It was after much thought and many discussions over the well being of our much-loved sport in Hong Kong that I decided to accept and assent to nominations for this position. I have been actively involved with Equestrianism in Hong Kong for around seven years and have a fond recollection of watching Kendall’s very first horse show at Tuen Mun. She was probably one of a dozen of children, all around the same age, competing. Sadly, the only other name I can recall from that day is Elysia Roach. Whilst many of these children may have left Hong Kong or have given up for some reason, this decline in numbers is all too evident in our sport today. It is common to have an average of six competitors in 1:00 to 1:10 metre class with only two people competing in the 1:20 metre class. Our youngest, regular children competitors are twelve years old and it has been a while since I saw anyone younger at our shows. Decisions made in the past, which benefited our better riders may have led to this and we have to accept that these decisions were the correct ones at the time. Having watched the Inter School Challenge last weekend it was noted that the majority of the mistakes were made through inexperience, which was understandable as only five of the sixteen riders at the final competition are regular competitors. Taking that another six teams did not make the final, means that we could potentially increase our competitive numbers by 35 riders, all sixteen years of age and under. Additionally, the HKPC has many riders with enough ability to compete. It is pleasing to see some of our top juniors return from Malaysia and they, recently, have done the HKEF proud in their fine achievements in Japan and Korea. Fortunately, there is now a programme to continue with their and other rider’s training. Having this programme in place, we now have the opportunity to refocus and the drive has to be to increase the number of competitors we have, especially children. Every effort must be made in making horses and ponies available for them to compete on. All of you are as passionate about the sport as what I am and many have heard my ramblings on not only increasing the numbers but also on improving the standards. This is not going to be an overnight success but with support, it can be achieved I realize that taking up a position on the Executive Committee is a responsible one, especially following the remarkable contributions made but I am willing to assist and where appropriate, lead in actions made for the better of Equestrianism in Hong Kong.
