2009 Beijing First International Polo Open Tournament drew to a close on 6th October, 2009. It is sponsored by Beijing Municipla Bereau of Sports and People’s Government of Yanqing County. Players of four teams from Australia, Brazil , New Zealand and China had experienced four fierce competitions in two days. Finally, the Brazil team won the Championship Cup, which is considered as the highest honor of Chinese Polo with a victory over New Zealand team, the score is 5 to 0.     From 5th to 6th of October, 2009 Beijing First International Polo Open Tournament, with the purpose of displaying polo skills and providing a platform for international communication and exchanges, was held in Beijing Sunny Time Polo Sports Co., ltd. This great event was approved by the General Administration of Sport of China, and it is also sponsored by Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports and People’s Government of Yanqing County, organized by Beijing Sports Competitions Administration Centre, Sports Bureau of Yanqing County, Beijing Sunny Time Polo Sports Co., ltd, it is another large-scale international tournament following the Beijing International Marathon, China Open, World Snooker China Open.     Beijing Deputy Mayor Mr. Liu Jingmin, Deputy Secretary-General of Beijing Municipal Government Hou Yulan, of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports Sun Kanglin, the Chairman of Development and planning Committee of Asian Equestrian Fedration and Deputy secretary General of Chinese Equestrian Association Chang Wei, etc,presented and watched the match. And some of our website(<a href="http://www.horse.org.cn/">www.horse.org.cn</a>) members also enjoyed this wonderful game   According to Mr. Xia, general manager of Beijing Sunny Time Polo Sports Co., ltd and Executive Director of Polo Committee, polo originated in the Han Dynasty in China, and was popular in the Tang and Song Dynasties, and was then passed to the western countries from India. To carry forward the essence of the Chinese traditional culture, Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports and People’s Government of Yanqing County decided to promote the fashionable sport polo in China.   It is said that the most luxurious game should be accompanied by the most luxurious line-up, the most prestigious competition should be participated by the most distinguished players, top-level competition should be equipped by the top partners. Polo is not only full of dynamism but can also catch spectator eyes. Polo tournament is always recognized as the high-end sports tournament, especially a top business platform for the high-end crowd and successful personages. Each successful holding of polo is sponsored by internationally renown enterprises such as Mercedes-Benz，Porsche，International airline of United Arab Emirates， which are leading roles in their fields respectively. Good pictures of the tournament, this only says about the photograhpy is good in China, yet as for the quality of polo tournament ..... too much of a JOKE!!!1.         The horses were in shockingly bad condition a.       If this happened back home we would be arrested for cruelty to animals
b.       One of the horses was in milk – having just given birth – there is no way that she should have been taken away from the baby foal and made to play
c.       The horses didn’t have shoes – their feet were all over the place
d.       We had no idea whet were riding – there was all sorts there – from little Mongolian ponies straight off the pasture land with no training to big lumbering horses that were totally lame
e.       The horses had no brakes – it was very dangerous out there
f.         The only thing that kept us safe was the fact that we didn’t go very fast and no-one’s horse was stoppable – so everyone kept going!!!

2.         The field condition is very poor
a.       The field size is supposed to be <chmetcnv wst="on" unitname="m" sourcevalue="275" hasspace="False" negative="False" numbertype="1" tcsc="0">275M</chmetcnv> x <chmetcnv wst="on" unitname="m" sourcevalue="165" hasspace="False" negative="False" numbertype="1" tcsc="0">165m</chmetcnv> ........this one is not
b.       Talk about rough – with this field your only hope is to keep the ball in the air – don’t let it touch the ground!
c.       The boards on the edge of the field were terrible – were gaps which could cause real injury to the horses or the ball might get stuck or hit a sharp edge
 3.         The organization
a.       Xia called this an ‘Open’ tournament – but no-one knew what to expect.......there was a Brazil team there on 18 goals, the NZ on 14-goals, the Australians on 8-goals – and the Chinese were minus 6 (at best) ...all of us could have played and destroyed that Chinese team by 20 goals or more, we chose not to in order to try to help them not look so bad. b.       This is no way to treat the patrons and players from around the world; we certainly won’t be going back
c.       Polo is a small global community, we will make sure that everybody knows, and after this no-one is going to want to go to <place wst="on"><city wst="on">Beijing</city></place> for polo. d.       It was nothing like what we had been told it would be
e.       The poor umpire, I’m sure he’s a sweet enough guy, but he was just there for show, someone in a shirt for the photos I think.   4.         The event management
a.       They lined up with big number of huge drums right behind the horses and starting banging – the horses were scared and took off, my patron was very angry for the arrangement, as we are more experience rider, and could see it coming and so got ourselves prepared beforehand. It was as if they had deliberately set out to scare the horses. b.       The main tent looked OK from outside, but you can tell they had no idea what they were doing, once you were inside you couldn’t see anything of the game, so everyone just gave up and moved outside

5.         The Chinese players
a.       Those guys have no idea how to play real polo, they are unsafe and have no concept of the rules
b.       The boys playing may have been the best grooms and stable lads that Xia has, but they have no training, some natural skills yet, but they are far off from being called players
c.       We all spent most of time just avoiding trouble d.       We tried to give them some tips and lessons, but there is no translation and no time was set aside for this, so I doubt there was much value – we could have helped so much more.
6.         Concluding comments
a.       This is only going to damage the reputation of polo in <place wst="on"><country-region wst="on">China</country-region></place>
b.       What he needs is to have someone come over and spend 2-3 weeks working with him, pointing out what needs to be changed and improved. c.       He has got to fix that field
d.       Until he gets some half-way decent horses he’s not going to get anywhere.  At one point I wanted to say that he needs to have more horses, but what would he do? - just drag more untrained and unfit Mongolian ponies and lactating mothers from their foals.......he has a long, long way to go

A Reply to Spicybay’s Comments on " Beijing First International Polo Open Tournament” 2009 Beijing First International Polo Open Tournament has successfully came to a close, but a comment from the forum user ‘Spicybay’ titled as "Beijing First International Polo Open Comments" made some discordant voices, which is a big concern for every one. From the view of a participating member who experienced the tournament, the comments in the article are clearly inconsistent with the facts and have a tendency to a malicious distortion of facts. Anyone of good sense can see that the "comments" are not in good faith as a friendly criticism, which makes everyone to be heartbroken.  The 1st Beijing International Polo Open Tournament pioneered the experience of the government organizing the international polo open tournaments. Anything in its ground-breaking period has flaws. But how to face and deal with it will show one’s outlook on life and values.
Now, some people are willing to say that the Polo sport is a noble movement, I would prefer to call it as a gentleman's game. In current times, China has no nobility (I really do not know who said that he himself is noble?), But we can’t have no gentleman.
Undeniably, this Open tournament indeed had some flaws, but  I welcome people to to help the organizer improving and enhancing the event organization with warm heart, sincerity, enthusiasm and through a normal channel.The chief of Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau Mr. Sun Kanglin, said: "After Olympics, Beijing's influence in the world increased, polo held in Beijing, can enhance Beijing's image in the world. Soccer and long distance running marathon can be held in any city and by anyone, but only when it reaches a certain degree of economic and social development, can they organize the polo international tournament. Beijing has the best horses and the best sports enthusiasts in the country, even though the same as Shanghai F1 racing, the ordinary people might not participate in this competition, but they can go to appreciate it. We hope to make the Polo Open tournament to be another fine sports tournament in Beijing, which is following Beijing International Marathon, China Open(tennis), Beijing Open snooker tournament."(cited in this discourse from the network of horse crazy blog, aima editor). I think that is right. It is proved that such a practice is also right. Beijing has succeeded in helding the Beijing International Marathon, China Open, Beijing Snooker Open, and I sincerely hope that the Beijing Municipal Government will continue to make efforts to build Beijing's new run for the polo as the city's remarkable card, to form the new spot in sports development of Beijing. I think this is also the desire of all those who love horses and look forward to seeing that. We are delighted to see and to enjoy it.  As far as I know, polo in China had a glorious history, but now lags far behind in the world, and after a long time stagnation, polo began in Beijing. Polo in Beijing is no more than 5 years, thus being somewhat immature. But the learning process is very important, and we should take each step carefully. The first place does not really matter, what matters is that currently we need the ability to continue working down to earth. Judging from the contents of the "comments", Spicybay is from the polo circle. I think as an insider of polo circle, one should not only see that China’s polo is in a renaissance period, but also understand "When everybody adds fuel, the flames rise high ", rather than do things that are not only derogatory towards others, but also bad for themselves. China’s Polo development needs the power of all, not those who waving the big stick stabled the words "international standards" to stop.  At this point, let me take the liberty to quote some words of the netizens (a horse fans’ blog) and to communicate with Spicybay: "As long as there are benefits for the development of polo or other things about horses, they should be promoted, be encouraged and be supported. “(Horse lover said) “Everything needs time to develop, for those beneficial to the development of horse industry, we should show tolerance, welcome them and allow their existence.” (Baihualin says) "The development also needs time and process, the success of the international polo countries today is also gained within a few days, and we should also give time to our polo people to learn and to make progress. If we can put aside prejudice and harsh critism on the issue rather than on the people, just point out the lackings, adding the organizer’s accepting the advices with open-minded and the improving of organization conditions, this  would promote polo of the entire Chinese people, and all the people involving in the polo circle will make great progress. There are not so many people in the polo circle, and if we do not treat each other frankly and unite together, then the loss of time and the waiting would be everyone's misfortune.
