Hello HP!

We do our riding in Weizhou (Guangdong Region) at the riding club.

I don't know how to train horses but we do have a very good trainer here. He is from California and used to do eventing competition in the States too.

Most of our thoroughbreds are retired race horses from HK and Macau, and a few warmbloods for eventing from Australia.

Your horse is beautiful! You are so lucky to be able to train him/her yourself!

Hi Galbie,

You know what, I've been seacrhing for methods to train horses and after ~5 years of searching, I finally found the one that I think to be the gentlest and most effective. It does a lot of operand conditioning for horses and the horse and rider can have a very good understanding.

I've been using this method with my horse and I'm VERY happy with the result. It has some kind of natural horsemanship ideas. It is not magic, or some mysterious ideas. Being an engineer, I like to analize the problems and solve them with the best method. What I see is it is pure science about learning theories and animal behaviors.

I just came out from a workshop regarding to this method of horse training. I felt so lucky to learn this and I would like to bring this method to China because:

1. It is safe.

2. It is so effective. It creates a loopy system that keep the horse inside the training route.

3. It is so gentle, horse never does things because you force it. We make the horse to be a problem solver and once it finds the right answer, it gets rewards immediatly. Because horses are rewarded by finding the right answer, it will reinforce the likelyhood the horse will do it again and again.

4. It can TRULY create the bond between human and horse. My horse boards in the 20+ acre pasture. Whenever I go to see him, all I need to do is whistle (within hearing distance) and he'll run to me. He is so happy to see me.

5. It can SIGNIFICANTLY reduce the cost of horse ownership. Because you train by yourself, you cut a lot of the cost that you have if done by professionals. I hope this kind of cost reduction can significantly reduce the entry barrier for people who want to enjoy horsemanship.

If you look at my picture carefully, you can see I ride without the bit. I never feel the need of using the bit because it is the horse's brain that decides what it wants to do, not the horse's mouth. So what we really need to do is to have its mind with us, listening to us, not yanking its mouth so it is forced to listen.

I'd like to share with you what I learned in this website. I hope I can type Chinese soon so we can have more discussions and more people can understand.

I feel thrilled to be able to bring this method to my beloved homeland.

Hi Galbie,

Do you know in china if there are vets standing by in the check points during the endurance race, to make sure all the horses are safe and sound?

In the US, vets are standing by in many check points of the endurance race. If the horses are injured, or not sound for the coming distance, it will be required to be off the race. By doing this we ensure that no horses are hurt by the sport.

There were 2 Endurance Races organized previously, one in Beijing in April 2009, the other one in Inner Mongolia in Aug 2009. Both races go by the FEI Rules (One Star = 80Km in one day), and there were vet stations with vets and volunteers to take pulse and check the conditions of the horses. (pl refer to previous posts on the subject in Chinese)

Unfortunately in the race in Beijing last April, there were too many competitors (more than 90 horses) and many did not go by the rules of the FEI (I think they were under-staffed). Some pushed the horses too hard. As a result, 5 horses died from the race.It was a very sad lesson for everyone.

We saw drastic improvement in the next race in Inner Mongolia, there were less than 50 horses in the endurance race, the FEI rules were strictly enforced, and all horses survived the race............phew!

HP : You really must teach us more on the subject of horsemanship and using natural ways to train the horse!

Hi, HP.

Nice to meet you here. I'm Jennifer, the English editor of this webiste. Actually  i served the International Endurance in Inner Mongolia on Aug,15,2009. We have the  vets standing by in the check points .

Here are some introduction for your info on the English forum and also the English version of this web: http://www.horse.org.cn/bbs/index.asp?boardid=37

I'm glad that you use the Natural Horsemanship's methods to train your horse. That's great! Right now not so many people in China use that way, but our website are trying to get more horse lovers know it.

For the  "liberty training", I'm not familiar with that and I can't open this http://www.hauteecolle.ru. Perhaps you can show us some pictures or vedios.

Cheers!

Jennifer

Jennifer,

Nice to meet you.

I hope I can type Chinese so more and more people can understand what I try to say.

Here's the website for the Liberty training. http://hauteecole.ru/en/alexander_nevzorov.php

I use the methods of "operand conditioning" with some skills I learned from Natural horsemanship and "bridge signal". The major difference between our method and Natural horsemanship is we 99% DO NOT increase the pressure to the horse if the horse is not responding to our command. Instead, we give it a lot of time to figure out the answer and if it gets it right, an instant reward is presented. By doing this, the horse is a problem solver and it is willing to try all kinds of things so it can gets the reward. We only reward the behavior that we're looking for. So in a very short time, the horse learns to cooperate and it teaches the horse to "always use its brain". Just like when you do a good job in the work, your boss give you a big bonus. And you'll try harder next time helping the company to do solve issues, in the hope of getting more bonus.

There're many things we can discuss regarding to this. Operand conditioning is a big topic in animal behavior (as well as human behavior) that many universities and researchers put lots of effort trying to understand the reasons behind. Because if we can understand why and how animals respond to stimulus, it is easier for us to understand human behavior, as well as how the brain works.

I'm glad that the endurance race has a good ending this year. We as horse lovers will never want our own horses being abused because of our own "human pride". To me, the horse feels nothing about the glory of a championship. I do not train my horse to be a championship. All I care is he and I can enjoy the wonderful time together. The "sense of unity" between him and me are what I strive for.

Jennifer,

Do you train your own horse? Is it true that in China the riding club prepares/trains the horses for the riders and all riders need to do is show up and ride?

In US, there're training barns that do this. Kids or beginners show up and tack (prepare) the horses and the lesson starts. However, I've never seen riding clubs that the riders do not need to take care of their horses. We need to have our own horse, or lease (rent) one from someone. We always have to take care of the horses and train them.
