Talk: An Overview of Foot-Related Lameness in
Horses and Shoeing Retired Race-horses
The old saying “No foot, no horse” has much merit, and it is important for everyone involved in
the horse sport to develop an understanding of foot-related issues in the horses we ride. To this
end, the Hong Kong Equestrian Federation has organized this talk by Dr. Daniel J. Humphrey
and Mr. Paul Cumming so that riders and horse owners can better understand the particular
stresses that our horses’ feet are subject to and how we can take steps to mitigate them.
In the first part of this talk, Dr. Humphrey will give an overview of the anatomy of the horse’s
foot and describe some of the common conditions that you may encounter including how these
conditions are diagnosed and treated.
Shoeing the retired racehorse can present significant challenges to any farrier. In the second part
of this talk, Mr. Cumming will give an overview on the history, principles and techniques of
farriery with special emphasis on applying this to the retired racehorse.
Dr. Humphrey is well known to riders in Hong Kong. He obtained a Bachelor of Veterinary
Medicine and a Master of Arts from the University of Cambridge and has gained wide ranging
experience in the evaluation and treatment of lameness in horses.
Mr. Cumming started his apprenticeship at 15 under the guidance of his father, who ran a
successful business shoeing Thoroughbreds at Flemington Racecourse Melbourne Victoria. He
obtained his Level 3 Master Farrier qualification from Glenormiston Agriculture College. Paul
has over 20 years experience shoeing Thoroughbreds.
Each subject will last for approximately 45 to 60 minutes (including time for questions) with a
10-minute break in between the two sessions. The seminar will be held at Beas River
Equestrian Center, will start at 10:30am on 6 Feb 2010 and finish at 1pm.
The admission fee for HKEF members is HK$100 and HK$200 for non-members. This is an
invaluable opportunity to ask a vet and a farrier all the foot-related questions you’ve always
wanted to know.
