Jose,

You need to take a look of "loopy training", coined by Alex in ~2000. This will help you understand if a behavior is well trained or not.

Last time when I did my free jump exercise, a friend wants to try the same thing. She is a Nature Horsemanship person who trains her horse by "pressure" and "release of pressure". When she released her horse in the jump chute, her horse shows no willingness to go over the poles. She chased it through the chute and the horse did the jump. However, the horse ran away after the jump, unwilling to come back to her. Why? Why not? If you were a horse, would you be willing to come back to her and go through the chute again?

So do you see the difference now? In NH, we "make the horse do" and the horse will just do the minimum to "get by". In R+, we "let the horse do", we let it think what "earns it the reward" so it will offer the behaviors we want with high motivation and "it will want to do more". As I said, keep the motivation and enjoyment of the training is top priority. Without it, you're poisoning your training.

Jose,

I think "Don't Shoot the Dog" is still the BEST. After reading that, you can move on to see Alex's 2 books. Alex has many thoughts about how to train some horse-specific behaviors.

Don't forget to check out Karen Pryor's other books: "Reaching the Animals Minds", and "Lads Before The Wind".

Check out if Alex is to give a clinic in your place. She will come to CA this fall. I'll go to see her again.

Jose,

You can make a plan regarding to what you want to train. You can train shoulder out, shoulder in, leg yield, piaff, levade, ... all at liberty. Can you imagine a horse offering those behaviors free of human pressure? Since you know the rules of shaping, it is going to be very easy, especially when you got a well-tempered mini.

I trained my horse some lateral works, and some free jumping. I plan to train him more systematically in the jumping techniques. My priority is to keep him motivated, never force him into doing anything. The result is he enjoys the training sessions all the time. He offers more than I expect and I think he loves being together with me. He seems to take the cues as an opportunity to win reward rather than looking at me saying "oh crab, here he comes again?"

Have fun with your horse, and be safe.

R+ is never "残忍". It is a method that the trainer and the trainee (horse) can build trust and strong relationship. The trainer never force the horse to do anything. It is the horse that voluntarily offer some behaviors to gain the recognition/reinforcement  from the trainer. The bond between the two can be so strong that they find it so rewarding just by being together. The trainer look forward to seeing the horse while the horse longs to stay with the trainer.

On the other side of the spectrum, the pressure-based methods disrupt the trust and relationship by forcing the horse to do things it either does not want or does not understand. The horse is unwilling to stay with the trainer for it makes no sense for it to do that.

You'll never understand this if you never try.

By Karen Pryor, from "Don't Shoot The Dog".

===========
"(in training by positive reinforcement)The trainer is the source of interesting, exciting, rewarding, life-enhancing event for the subject, and the subject's responses are interesting and rewarding for the trainer, so they do become attached."

"A punished or correction-trained animal learns to give the minimum necessary in order to stay out of trouble. These learners are 'good solders': They do what they're told, and they never volunteer. Under this regimen, even if obedient, learners remain far more interested in their own doings and private life than in whatever you or any voice of authority might want. They're therefore not only vulnerable to distractions, they are hoping for distractions."
