Jose,

You can make a
plan regarding to what you want to train. You can train shoulder out,
shoulder in, leg yield, piaff, levade, ... all at liberty. Can you
imagine a horse offering those behaviors free of human pressure? Since
you know the rules of shaping, it is going to be very easy, especially
when you got a well-tempered mini.

I trained my horse some
lateral works, and some free jumping. I plan to train him more
systematically in the jumping techniques. My priority is to keep him
motivated, never force him into doing anything. The result is he enjoys
the training sessions all the time. He offers more than I expect and I
think he loves being together with me. He seems to take the cues as an
opportunity to win reward rather than looking at me saying "oh crab, here he
comes again?"

Have fun with your horse, and be safe.

Yes, I do, but not very often.

Most of the time I use my fist as the target. Remember my free jump video? I raise up my fist for him to follow me back to the beginning of the chute. He touches my fist with his nose.

>我会不自觉给它过多的压力

I used to give my horse pressure, too. However, during the time when I broke my finger, I cannot use pressure at all. I got to rethink what I can do and finally figure out that 100% R+ is the way to go. I'll never go back to pressure.

I think piaff should be doable. My long reining is not going anywhere now because we come back to jump.

[转帖]How does clicker training work?

That’s actually two questions, isn’t it?

1. How do I use a clicker to train my pet?
2. How do clickers help animals learn?

Let’s consider a training scenario. You would like to teach your horse to raise her hoof on cue.

  • You tap the hoof or fetlock with a training stick.
  • The horse shifts her weight …
  • You click and treat.
  • You tap the hoof or fetlock again.
  • The horse shifts her weight and shuffles her foot …
  • You click and treat.
  • You continue cueing with the taps …
  • Rewarding every better try until she lifts her hoof completely off the ground …
  • You click and give her a jackpot (extra special treat or extra amount of treats).

That’s how easy clicker training is to do! You cue (with a stick, your hand, and/or your voice); you click in the exact moment the horse does want you are asking for; you reward even the smallest try; you build on each successive attempt until you achieve the behavior you want; and then you perfect it.

When you first tapped your horse’s fetlock, she didn’t know what you wanted. She shifted her weight and you clicked and gave her a reward. She then knew she did something right. The next time, she tried something more – she shuffled. You communicated clearly to her that she was on the right track. So, she tried to do more each time until she lifted her hoof completely and got a big jackpot and a lot of praise.

She learned quickly and eagerly because:

1. You were clear and consistent in your request by tapping her hoof
2. You ‘marked’ the instant she did the right thing by clicking the clicker
3. You rewarded her for the right response

In conventional training, animals are punished when they do the wrong thing. In clicker training we show the animal exactly what we want and we reward all positive movement towards our goal while ignoring wrong answers. The horse isn’t afraid to try different responses. Either he’ll get a reward or he won’t. He will quickly perform the behaviors that offer rewards and will abandon non-fruitful behavior. Now’s he’s thinking and not just reacting!

Jose,

The writing is a bit different than the "real" free shaping idea. The reason is in the "pure" free shaping, the behavior is established first before the cue is introduced. In the scenario above, the cue is introduced before the behavior is established.

In any case, as long as you're not using force or "escalation of the pressure" to make the animals obey, it is still ok. However, I have to say that pure free shaping gives better result. The drawback is it takes more patience and requires more trainer's skills.

>You tap the hoof or fetlock with a training stick.
>The horse shifts her weight …

What if the horse does not shift its weight?

Try other method like targeting or any other new ideas. Make sure you NEVER EVER increase the pressure so your horse makes a try. If yo do this, you "force the horse do". This is also the reason why clicker training never blends well with NH. In NH, trainers are "granted" the right to drive the horse around by "pressure", "escalation of pressure",  and "release of pressure". I still remember how Clinton Anderson teaches the horse to back up. He escalates the feeling of discomfort by shaking the lead rope violently till the horse makes a try to back up. Poor horse, I think. It works, but do you think that the horse would like to see this "back up" cue? Alex once commented on this NH method by saying "I do not want my horse to HATE back up".

The fundamental philosophy between the two is totally different.

Check out what Karen said :

========
In clicker training (operant conditioning with a marker signal) the behavior is developed first, as an operant freely offered in expectation of positive reinforcement. The discriminative stimulus is then paired with that operant in order to function as an indicator of a reinforcement opportunity. Each discriminative stimulus signals the opportunity to earn reinforcement for one particular behavior or suite of behaviors. This positively trained discriminative stimulus always 'opens the door' to positive reinforcement. If the behavior does not occur, the only result is that no reinforcement occurs. When the behavior occurs, reinforcement is guaranteed.
