4、 Use light, feathery touches on the withers and the start of the back, just as you would massage another human. Avoid applying too much pressure at the beginning, and look for signs of distress in the horse. 5、 Play soft music or talk soothingly while you massage your horse's back. Give him every indication that you aren't going to hurt him, and stop the massage immediately if he dances in place, kicks out, bites or seems to be in pain. 6、 Increase the pressure gradually as you work your way down the back, returning to the withers frequently to massage over the areas you've already covered. Focus particularly on the areas on either side of the spine, as these are typically the most overworked muscles.
